Arlington, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) has lost the first ruling on his executive order creating an opt-out for school mask mandates. An Arlington Judge has issued a temporary restraining order against EO2, following a lawsuit brought by seven school districts including Richmond. The Governor's office says they will appeal.
The judge ruled the order took away powers delegated to the school boards. While seven districts have sued, many others have chosen to keep their mask mandates. In the metro area, Richmond and Henrico have mandates while Chesterfield and Hanover have made masks optional.
The suit is one of four on the issue. A group of Chesapeake parents has sued in front of the State Supreme Court. A group of parents of disabled children has also sued in federal court. Meanwhile, a group of Loudoun parents have sued their district, looking for a mask option.
