Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Gov. Glenn Youngkin on Thursday proposed allocating hundreds of millions of dollars for child care and early education in Virginia. This comes as pandemic-era relief funds that had been set aside for these programs begin to expire.
Virginia had used $794 million in pandemic relief funds to expand child care and early education programs. However, the expiration of those funds means 27,000 children in the Commonwealth could lose access to their care, according to a press release from Youngkin’s office. Families would start to lose coverage in March 2024.
“At the heart of this is ensuring that we continue to serve the population being served today and that dollars follow the children on their parents’ best wishes,” Youngkin said.
The Youngkin administration will present other components of a two-year budget plan to state lawmakers on December 20.
