In an exclusive interview with Battleground America’s Tara Servatius just hours after he announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Republicans need to ditch “swamp culture.”
What did the Sunshine State leader mean by that?
“I think too many Republicans over the years, they campaign on conservative values and conservative issues. Then they get elected and it’s like they forget about everything they said they would do during the campaign and they just become part of the club up there,” DeSantis explained. “And that swamp culture needs to be broken.”
Former President Donald Trump remained the Republican front runner Thursday following DeSantis’ campaign announcement on Twitter Spaces. However, the Floridian has maintained a second-place position in polling over the past few months. He is popular in his home state, where he won by a large margin during the most recent gubernatorial election.
“He made the word Florida synonymous with freedom and started a movement of literally... a movement of moving vans moving to Florida,” said Servatius.
According to DeSantis, his work as governor shows how he can help the GOP get past its “swamp culture” tendencies.
“I never was part of that club at the time,” he said. “I was up there and I’ve governed in Florida in a way which we’ve taken on the elites across a whole wide range of issues. I mean, you know, we banned central bank digital currency in Florida – we’re the first one to do that – that’s a hobbyhorse of a lot of the elites. We’re going… against the woke capital and taking on all these important fights.”
Indeed, DeSantis has gone toe-to-toe with Disney, who he has slammed for being “woke” over his Parental Rights in Education bill. He has also signed more bills to “protect the innocence of children” in Florida.
“I have a proven track record,” said DeSantis.
