NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The Empire State Building will be lit up red Monday night to celebrate Broadway’s return.
According to officials, the iconic New York City skyscraper will be illuminated in the color red as part of a partnership with The Broadway League’s “This is Broadway” campaign.
“The Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry, will be joined by Broadway’s ‘Chicago the Musical’ stars Ana Villafañe and Bianca Marroquín at a lighting ceremony to celebrate Broadway’s return,” officials said in a release.
“This is Broadway” is designed to encourage theater lovers to return to Broadway with a once-in-a-lifetime contest, comprehensive new website and a Broadway festival.
“’This is Broadway’ brings together the joy and excitement we all feel for this art form and the rebound of New York City,” said The Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin. “Broadway reopening means 97,000 workers returning to their jobs and the insatiable desire for live performance back on stage.”
A short film voiced by Oprah Winfrey will kick off the campaign and features appearances by Hugh Jackman, Bruce Springsteen, Lin-Manuel Miranda and more.
Clips from the film can be viewed on the new website, where theatergoers can also find a comprehensive overview of what is playing on the Great White Way.
Meanwhile, the League will also soon launch a contest in which one winner can win four tickets to every Broadway show in the 2021-2022 season. The contest will run from Sept. 1 through Oct. 15.
