NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The Grand Central Oyster Bar has delayed its reopening after a near 17-month shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest, two-week delay was attributed to “unforeseen operational issues and delays caused by Hurricane Ida,” which tore through New York last week, killing 13 people in the city and flooding many homes and businesses.

The reopening of the 108-year-old oyster bar had been set for Sept. 7. It will now resume operations the week of Sept. 20, management said.

President Janet Poccia, executive chef Sandy Ingber, and vice president Mohammed Lawal released a joint statement on the postponement.

“We feel terribly for all of our employees who have been working so hard to get ready to reopen, and for all of our patrons,” they said in the statement. “It’s very disappointing for everyone, but we’ll continue to persevere.”

The popular seafood restaurant, which is located on the lower level of Grand Central Terminal, opened for less than two weeks last October before closing again over low foot traffic amid the pandemic.
