NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The city's new, reduced-lane configuration for a stretch of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway will take effect Monday, Aug. 30.
The new layout will cut the number of lanes from three to two in each direction from Atlantic Avenue and the Brooklyn Bridge, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio, who earlier this summer announced plans to repair the Robert Moses-era cantilever.
The lane reductions are both part of planned changes to facilitate the rehabilitation of the highway’s dilapidated triple-cantilever and the first step in a long-term approach to reimagine the BQE as a smaller roadway.
“During this necessary work on the BQE, we strongly encourage drivers to seek alternate routes and use public transportation,” said ” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Hank Gutman in a statement on Friday.
“This lane remarking may be inconvenient for some, but it is essential to making the road safer immediately and for decades to come," he added.
The DOT began work repainting the lanes Friday evening, causing massive delays on the BQE.
