The Country Queen recently shared that she has long considered developing a musical biopic or theater production as a vehicle to tell the story of her six-decade-long career, but the project was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During an appearance on Mr. Nashville Talks Parton shared, “I’ve been talking about doing my Broadway musical and we were really, really way out ahead of that, and then COVID hit and that changed my mind about a whole lot of things.”
But not all is lost for the living legend. “I do intend someday to be on Broadway, but I’m thinking now that I might do my life story as a feature,” revealed Dolly. “Maybe possibly even a musical feature, so we’re in talks about that.”
Parton noted that the movie project would likely require several different actresses to portray her throughout her nearly 66-year-long career. In 2021 Dolly told Southern Living magazine, “We’d probably have to have — as long as my career has been — like, a little Dolly and a middle Dolly and then the older one.”
However, there is one actress that Parton has always had her eye on to portray her. Parton admitted that she believes Kristin Chenoweth is the perfect blonde bombshell to take on her storied career and accomplishments. “I love Kristin Chenoweth,” Parton shared in a 2020 Marie Claire interview. “She’s just absolutely fantastic.”
During a 2021 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, with guest host Jay Leno, Chenoweth said to the camera, “Dolly, hurry up! I’m ready!” I just grew up listening to her, and, you know, I do a pretty good … ” before belting out a perfect Dolly copy of her beloved hit, “Here You Come Again.”
