In this segment of Kim on a Whim, sponsored by Missouri Brush Control, Kim St. Onge and guest host Dan Buck critique national observances surrounding Banned Books Week. St. Onge and Buck discuss statistics from PEN America regarding book challenges in public school libraries, evaluating differences in state library challenge metrics across Texas, Florida, and Missouri. The hosts debate age-appropriateness standards for school library media centers, examining instances of explicit content in juvenile literature, the distinction between public school collection curation and federal censorship, and the role of parental supervision in student reading materials.
For details regarding school library collection policies and curriculum standards, consult your local school district board of education or the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
