NJ co-leading multi-state effort to block Trump’s plan to cut noncitizens from 2030 census

New Jersey is co-leading a multi-state effort to block President Donald Trump’s proposed changes to the 2030 census.

Pennsylvania is also among the states arguing against changes that would exclude millions of noncitizens from the population count and, as a result, reduce representation in Congress and cause huge losses in federal funding. The changes would also prohibit the census from asking about race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

New Jersey AG Jennifer Davenport said everyone counts, as the Constitution requires.

Trump administration officials have said noncitizens are not true inhabitants and that they lack sufficient ties and allegiance.

Officials also said the census should be a colorblind count, and that demographic information is tracked in other ways.
