A Pennsylvania State Police veteran was struck and killed this morning in Schuylkill County.
Officials say State Trooper Mike Pahira, a 20-year veteran of the State Police, was conducting a vehicle safety inspection around 7am on the side of the Interstate 81 South when he was hit by a passing vehicle.
"Today is a horrible reminder of the service and the sacrifice that they devote to the Commonwealth every single day," said Gov. Josh Shapiro, who has ordered flags lowered to half-staff in Pahira's honor.
Police say the vehicle also collided with another vehicle and caught fire.
The driver was taken to the hospital. No word on any charges.
