Laura Dern is using her Oscar win to speak to what it means to be unified.
In a RADIO.COM exclusive interview, Dern opened up about the “divisiveness” of the plot in “Marriage Story,” the Netflix film that landed her a Best Supporting Actress nod.
While the story reflects the timeline of a heartbreaking divorce, the couple’s separation comes with a message of togetherness. “It is a love story, but it’s a love story through the lens of divorce. And it really speaks to all of us about moving through heartbreak or divisiveness to come together,” she explains.
But it doesn’t just end there. According to Dern, the messages conveyed through this story of tension and drama speaks to a human need for harmony - not just in love, but on our planet. “And the commonality of this story is about coming together for a child, but as I spoke to, we need come together for a planet, we need to come together in this nation,” she said, echoing her Oscar acceptance speech.
“So there’s a lot to learn from that magical script, you know, I’m so honored to be part of,” she concludes.
During her tearful acceptance speech, Dern said, “Noah [Baumbach] wrote a movie about love, and about breeching division in the name and in the honor of family and home and hopefully for all of us in the name of our planet."
Dern’s win marks the first time an Oscar went to an actor or actress for their role in a Netflix film.
