As air travel surges, should you question your airline loyalty?

Demand for air travel is surging right now, as the sudden pivot back to fuller flights has some airlines scrambling and some passengers fuming.

It's a challenging time in the skies, and travelers need to temper expectations.

"There are a number of issues that we've been seeing," Nick Ewen, Senior Editor of The Points Guy, told KCBS Radio on Monday. "Not just involving the highly publicized passengers behaving badly, but cancellations, delays and full flights where, if you miss a connection or delay, you might not get to your final destination, unfortunately, for a day, or two or even three after you were originally scheduled."

But things are looking up.

Airlines scored very differently in The Points Guy's latest survey, with Delta Air Lines topping the site’s annual list. Ewen said customers largely valued flexibility and adaptability, arguing that the industry needs to start meeting passengers where they are.

Consumers haven’t been in as strong of a position to question their airline loyalty as they are now, according to Ewen.

"This is a really great time, I think, for customers to flex their power and see if the grass is greener on the other side," Ewen argued. "So if someone is very loyal to United, for example, maybe they want to see if American, or Delta or even a carrier like Southwest can better fit their needs."
