The 30-year-old singer posted the handwritten lyrics on her Instagram, coupled with the caption "These lyrics were written almost 2 years ago at the beginning of my ESV. It was at a time I felt misunderstood. I have spent the last 18 months painting a sonic picture of my perspective to share with you. The time has arrived to release a song that I could perfect forever. Although my work is done, this song will continue to write itself everyday. The fact it remains unfinished is a part of its beauty. That is my life at this moment ….. unfinished yet complete.”
"The truth is bullet proof there's no fooling you... I don't dress the same / Me + who ya say I was yesterday have gone our separate way," the opening verse reads.
Miley had been teasing the new single for awhile now as she alluded to the song lyrics in her cover with British Vogue. “I know I used to be crazy / I know I used to be fun / You say I used to be wild / I say I used to be young," Cyrus said those lyrics came to her after she was brought another typical club track and felt she no longer related to that type of music.
In a post made on X (formerly Twitter), Miley wrote "August 25TH. USED TO BE YOUNG. In celebration of my new single release Endless Summer Vacation (backyard sessions) continues. Aug 24 @ 10pm EDT on ABC. This time with a retrospective interview sharing stories about the first 30 years of my life in honor of U2BY. This song is dedicated to my loyal fans. I love YOU for loving every version of ME. Always, Miley"
Fans had been catching on that the release was near as promotional posters had began to surface earlier this week. The posters featured Miley coupled with famous lyrics from older songs like "I hopped off the plane at LAX," “I came in like a wrecking ball," before getting to the new text/lyric “I say I used to be young.”
