The Guardians have placed Alex Cobb on the 15-day injured list due to a fractured nail on his pitching hand. The news comes just 10 days after he made his first start of the season. The 36-year-old missed the end of the 2023 season and a majority of the 2024 season with a hip infringement, as well as cortisone injections in his pitching shoulder.
Cobb was a member of the San Francisco Giants when the hip injury occurred and spent most of the year on their roster. It wasn’t until the deadline, July 30th, when the Guardians made a trade to acquire the right-hander.
While Cobb struggled in his first start, he bounced back nicely in his most recent outing. He allowed just one run across five and two-thirds innings of work in a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Guardians fans were hopeful Cobb would help shore up the back end of the rotation and be able to provide some stability to a unit that desperately needed it. The Guards starting rotation currently sit with the 20th-best ERA at 4.29.
Cobb was originally slated to make a start on Wednesday, but that is now sent to be announced at a later time.
With Cobb’s move to the injured list, the team selects Anthony Gose from AAA Columbus. The former second-round pick was selected as a hitter back in 2008 but transitioned into pitching between the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
He has made one appearance for the Guards this season and it didn’t go to plan, lasting just an inning and a third, with two runs surrendered.
The Guardians also transferred Sam Hentges to the 60-day injured list from the 15-day IL. Hentges was supposed to return for a rehab assignment with the Columbus Clippers on August 4th but was scratched with more shoulder issues. He most recently traveled to Dallas for a second opinion, but the move alludes to something more serious than initially thought.
