CLEVELAND, OH - Cleveland Cavaliers guard Ricky Rubio has announced his retirement from the NBA via his social media accounts. Rubio and the team agreed to a buyout, according to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.
It was previously announced by the team in August that Rubio would be stepping away from the team, but there was some thought that the 33-year-old Spanish guard could return to the team, as he was listed on the opening day roster.
He was traded to the Cavaliers in August of 2021 from the Timberwolves and had success early on for the team, averaging 13.1 points and 6.6 assists per game in 34 games before tearing his ACL in December that same year, ending his season.
Following his return in free agency on July 7, 2022, Rubio averaged 5.2 points and 3.5 assists in 17.2 minutes per game in 33 games in the 2022-23 season.
The Cavaliers announced that the 33-year-old guard would be stepping away from the team for his mental health in August.
