Cleveland City Council proposes massive parking rate hikes for special events, including Cavs, Guardians and Browns games

CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Fans that attend Cleveland Cavaliers, Guardians or Browns games downtown and park in city owned garages and lots could be in for some sticker shock soon.

Cleveland City Council is considering modified parking ordinance legislation that includes significant parking rate hikes for special events, which include Cavs, Guardians and Browns games.

The legislation, which was introduced at Monday night’s city council meeting, would allow several city garages and lots, which had been charging between $10-$30 to park for special events, to charge “up to $60” according to the modified parking ordinance that was introduced and reviewed by 92.3 The Fan.

The Muni lot, famous for Browns tailgating, would see the largest rate increase from $30 to “up to $70” per space should the legislation be approved.

The legislation also includes the ability to replace the coin based parking meters downtown with smart meters that allow for the use of an app and credit or debit cards to pay.

The cost to park at parking meters will also increase and the free time to use them in the evening and weekend will be decreased under the current plan.

The city plans to move the start time for free parking at meters from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., start charging for meter usage at 7 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. as well as eliminate free parking at meters on weekends.

The proposed legislation was read by council and referred to administrative review.
