CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson is set to make his first NFL start Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
Deshaun Watson tested his sore right shoulder during a light 15-minute workout Sunday morning by throwing short 5, 7 and 12 yard passes in between consultations with head athletic trainer Joe Sheehan.
After the workout, which ended around 10:25 a.m. Watson walked over with Sheehan to speak with head coach Kevin Stefanski, EVP/GM Andrew Berry, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and others.
Watson was limited at practice all week to what Stefanski said was “light throwing.”
Watson suffered the injury with around 6 minutes to play in the third quarter if last Sunday’s 27-3 win over the Titans on a 10-yard run at the 6-minute mark of the third quarter when Titans safety Amani Hooker hit him in the right shoulder.
Browns tight end David Njoku, who suffered burns to his face and arms in a home accident while lighting a firepit, is active for Cleveland.
Baltimore will be without receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Rashod Bateman, all All-Pro left tackle Ronnie Staley, safety Marcus Williams, cornerback Marlon Humphrey and linebacker Odafe Oweh.
Thompson-Robinson was selected din the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of UCLA.
Thompson-Robinson started 48 of 50 games he appeared in for the Bruins where he completed 63.3% of his passes for 10,710 yards with 88 touchdowns and 36 interceptions over five years.
Thompson-Robinson becomes the 35th starting quarterback since 1999. Only three times since the Browns returned to the NFL have they had a starter start every game in the regular season - Tim Couch in 2001 and Baker Mayfield in 2019 and 2020.
The Browns traded veteran Josh Dobbs in late August to the Arizona Cardinals for a 2024 fifth-round pick. Dobbs quickly was named their starter shortly after the trade.
