The Fort Worth Zoo is making a very heart-wrenching decision to relocate an abandoned baby gorilla.
Many of us have been following the path of Jameela, the Zoo's first baby gorilla born by Cesarean section on January 5th. After Jameela's birth, her mother did not display any interest in caring for her so zoo staff have been bottle feeding her while making two attempts to get other gorillas to mother Jameela. But these have failed.
Fort Worth zookeepers are now moving the baby to Cleveland's Metroparks Zoo which has had success in finding surrogate mothers in similar circumstances.
John Griffioen, the zoo’s Assistant Director of Animal Programs and Conservation, says they want to give Jameela every chance possible of being brought up by a gorilla mother.
