CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – Nick Chubb would like to remain a Cleveland Brown.
But the two-time Pro Bowler is leaving that in his agent’s hands.
“I'm just letting my agent and the Browns handle that,” Chubb said Tuesday morning prior to the opening practice of mandatory minicamp. “I'm just here to play, be here for my team, continue to get better and try to become a better teammate and a better team so that's all I'm focusing on and all of that will take care of itself.”
Chubb indicated that he thought his agent and the Browns have begun talks on a new deal.
“I told my agent to just kind of handle it for me until he needs me,” Chubb said.
The Browns selected Chubb 35th overall in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft and he's not disappointed since his selection.
Chubb has run for 3,557 yards and 28 touchdowns while averaging 5.2 yards per carry and added 72 catches for 577 yards and two touchdowns and has been selected to the Pro Bowl the last two years.
“Cleveland drafted me however many years ago it was and trusted me, put their faith in me to come here and kind of build this culture and build this team I've been part of,” Chubb said. “Cleveland’s where I want to be, so I hope everything can work out in that direction.”
Chubb is among the centerpieces of the Browns’ prolific offense that carried the team to its best season in over a quarter century, an 11-5 finish in the regular season and Wild Card victory over the Steelers in Pittsburgh.
New deal or not, Chubb plans to remain true to himself.
“No matter what happens I’ll still be who I am,” Chubb said. “That’s the biggest thing I’m focused on is to continue to be who I am and be the guy I need to be for this team.”
Unlike Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward, who had the fifth-year options on their rookie contracts exercised in April, Chubb is entering the final year of his four-year rookie deal hence the urgency to extend him this offseason.
“I don’t like uncertainty and I know here in Cleveland what I have,” Chubb said. “The players and coaches, the city of Cleveland. Cleveland’s where I want to be and that’s my main focus is being here in Cleveland.”
