In town for business, Lainey Wilson found her way to our Los Angeles studios to talk with Bru about her recent collab with John Mayer on “Phone, Keys, Wallet,” newlywed life with Duck, and what the Country star is still chasing after accomplishing so much.

Still learning to sit still, Wilson shared with Bru some of the activities she’s recently embraced to slow her whirlwind life. "I've been writing a lot of poetry which has been giving me an opportunity to sit still and like look inward,” she admits. “I've also been doing a lot of bird watching."
The singer is still celebrating her most recent collab, working with John Mayer on the song, “Phone, Keys, Wallet.” The guitar icon came to the track organically according to Lainey, who happened to see Mayer at the right place at the right time. “At Chaplin Studios, we were putting a song together and John happened to be there in the studio over,” she explains. “We took the cellphone over there and we were like, ‘hey, John, you gotta listen to this,’ and he listened and I was like, 'do you want to play on it?'"
“First time meeting him and he's like, ‘let's do it right now.’ So he went and grabbed his guitars and played on it just right there and I think honestly that's when you find like those special magical moments, the ones that really aren't planned, the ones that just happened.”
“He's a cool person and he's just as kind as he is talented and he's become a dear friend of mine, which is kind of crazy for me to say because I mean he's, I just look up to him in so many different ways, but he's taught me a lot even just getting to write music with him and be a part of his world that way. I feel like he's teaching me how to like color outside of the lines a little bit which is fun.”
With so much success in Country music and beyond, is there anything still on the list that Lainey Wilson is chasing these days? “For me, I am just chasing really the thing that matters the most to me, which is just connecting to people, just connecting with as many people as I possibly can,” Wilson reveals. “I think that's what really this is all about in the grand scheme of things, you know, when I sit back and I'm still and I realize the big picture of things.”
Next up for Wilson is another turn hosting the CMA Awards, and an opening slot for Harry Styles as part of his Together, Together tour.
“To tell you the truth, I don't really get starstruck over people, but there was a moment where I was back there with him, and I was like, ‘this is Harry Styles.’ This is crazy,” admits Lainey.
