Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed house Bill 29 back in December, which effectively legalized sports betting in the state and ended a three-year process that began with a 2018 decision from the U.S. Supreme Court to end the federal ban on sports gaming.

There was some hope from lawmakers that a start date could have been achieved in time for the 2022 NFL season, but the Jan. 1 date will allow the state to fully prepare for the launch. Fans will be able to place wagers for the final two weeks of the season and playoffs, including Super Bowl LVII.

Ohio joins four of its border states — Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana — in legalizing sports betting.

Bettors will be able to wager on both professional and college sports in Ohio, including Ohio State Buckeyes games.

Casinos, stadiums, bars and restaurants will have the ability to apply for gambling licenses, which will be regulated by the Ohio Casino Control Commission.
