Dr. Anthony Fauci urged Americans to put aside concerns of personal liberties and unite against the “common enemy” that is the coronavirus as cases soar due to the delta variant’s spread.

The chief White House medical adviser appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation” Sunday touting mask and vaccine mandates to curb new cases.

"You have to get the overwhelming proportion of people vaccinated — but you also have to do mitigation, and that gets to the controversial issue of mask wearing, and the mandating of [vaccines],” Fauci said.

He added that while there are “breakthrough” cases among the vaccinated, their illnesses are far less severe.

“We've got to do mitigation. Put aside all of these issues of concern about liberties and personal liberties and realize we have a common enemy and that common enemy is the virus," Fauci added. "And we really have to go together to get on top of this. Otherwise, we're going to continue to suffer as we're seeing right now."

Weekly new coronavirus cases in the US have soared this summer, from more than 140,500 weekly cases by the end of May to 760,300 by the second week of August, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
