The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced the albums and singles awarded to their Gold & Platinum program on Thursday.

Established in 1958, to honor artists and highlight recording sales, “Gold & Platinum Awards have come to stand as a benchmark of success for any artist.”
Taylor Swift’s latest album, Midnights, was named top album of the year with it achieving double-platinum status and selling over 2 million units. Future won top single, with his song for “WAIT FOR U” featuring Drake and Tems.
There were four additional platinum and eight gold albums awarded on the list.
The four platinum albums honored were Beyoncé - RENAISSANCE, Future - I NEVER LIKED YOU, Harry Styles - Harry’s House, and Lil Durk - 7220
The eight gold albums included Brent Faiyaz - WASTELAND, Jack Harlow - Come Home The Kids Miss You, Kodak Black - Back For Everything, Lil Baby - It’s Only Me, Rod Wave - Beautiful Mind, Walker Hayes - Country Stuff The Album, and two from YoungBoy Never Broke Again - Colors and The Last Slimeto
Jon Carmanica of Popcast sat down with Jon Pareles and Lindsay Zoladz to discuss what they believe to be the best albums of 2022.
This episode opened up with Beyoncé’s "Cuff It," from her album RENAISSANCE. There were two albums out of a list of ten that they all agreed were top albums of the year: Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE and Rosalía’s MOTOMAMI.
One thing everyone can agree on is that the Queen Bey had one of the best albums of the year. Reflected in her unit sales of 1 million and her songs continuously being trending sounds on social media platforms, it is undeniable that RENAISSANCE made its mark this year.
Carminaca shared his appreciation of RENAISSANCE because this album wasn’t quite like her previous projects. He described it as having more “texture” and being “breathable.”
Zoladz explained how “hard it was to take songs out of context” but that’s one of her favorite things about the album.
A common consensus was that the new direction Beyoncé took with this project was like a breath of fresh air. Carminaca argued that her album is a mix of careless and careful.
“Hentai,” from MOTOMAMI was highlighted as they transitioned from Beyoncé to Rosalía. MOTOMAMI was another project that created trending sounds on platforms like TikTok and even was at the forefront of viral challenges.
Carmanica described the album as “really chaotic in the best way, I was never bored.”
Jon Pareles admitted he initially didn’t like the album but shared he listened to it one day and realized “this works.”
