HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) - In the wake of their blockbuster trade of James Harden, as well as a 13-game losing streak, the Houston Rockets' future seems to be heading towards one inevitable endpoint -- a complete and total rebuild.
On Tuesday, that idea came one step closer to reality when a report from Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer surfaced of the Rockets potentially considering massive overhaul, with one league executive even mentioning the term "fire sale."
"I keep hearing they're going to fire-sale," a rival scout told Fischer.
With the trade deadline on March 25th quickly approaching, Houston's prospects at reforming the roster could happen sooner than later, with another league executive telling Fischer that the Rockets have already begun to reach out to other franchises.
"They're starting to call teams," the executive said.
Fortunately for the Rockets, the vast majority of their assets, including Victor Oladipo, P.J. Tucker, Danuel House Jr., and Sterling Brown, among others, are particularly desirable to teams looking to add impactful bodies on the wings heading into the postseason.
And with just a .1-percent chance of making the postseason, as well as very little to no foundational pieces existing anywhere with the roster as it is currently constructed, each of those players could easily be moved for draft capital and or team-friendly deals to help kick start the rebuild.
It would also behoove Houston to move players like Oladipo and Tucker in particular, due to the fact that their draft pick for this season is only top-4 protected.
Meaning, that if they fall outside the top-4 in the draft order, they would send the draft pick to Oklahoma City as part of the Russell Westbrook deal, and miss out on what could potentially be one of the deepest and most talented drafts in recent memory.
It is without a doubt a tough position to be in, but unfortunately for the Rockets, it looks to be their only option.
