HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- The Texans won’t get much closer to a scrimmage than they did Thursday at the Methodist Training Center.
As SportsRadio 610’s Sean Pendergast reported earlier in the day, the Texans operated almost exclusively in 11-on-11 drills.
Head coach Bill O’Brien said the goal of Thursday’s practice was to get a good look at special teams, and whether they could sustain a drive on both sides of the ball.
“What type of shape are we in?” O’Brien said after practice. “With the ones and the twos, can we drive the ball 10 plays, 12 plays and be in enough shape to finish that drive or get off the field when we need a stop?”
But as far as a full-scale scrimmage with players beating up on each other, the Texans are not having it.
O’Brien said that would not do them any good. If the Texans are going to be as healthy as possible when they open against the Chiefs on Sept. 10, they can’t beat themselves.
Veterans with lengthy injury histories like J.J. Watt and Will Fuller are on special programs to ramp-up for the season.
There may not be a greater accomplishment in camp than finishing it with key players healthy.
