Texans officially announce RB Marlon Mack signing

(SportsRadio 610) - The Texans officially announced signing former Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack on Monday.

Mack joins a running back group currently led by veteran Rex Burkhead, with Royce Freeman, Scottie Phillips, Darius Anderson and Dare Ogunbowale. Of those backs, only Burkhead and Freeman played more than 20 offensive snaps for Houston.

In signing Mack on a one-year deal worth $2 million, the Texans potentially get a lead back a low cost. Mack's best season was in 2019, when he ran for 1,091 yards on 247 carries and started 12 of 14 games.

But in September 2020, Mack suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In 2021, Mack played in just six games, starting none after taking a backseat to Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines.

Texans special teams coordinator Frank Ross was an assistant with the Colts from 2018-2020 and worked with Mack.

"Marlon is a very consistent person, quiet guy, reserved," Ross said Monday. "He's a good locker room player. I think this guy's ready to prove himself at any point. If you ask him to work as a kick returner, he will be willing to do that. I'm excited to see him for the first time again and work with Marlon again. Anybody that joins our roster, come here, prove it every single day."
