The Chiefs and Tyrann Mathieu appear to be parting ways after a fruitful three-year relationship.

The split seemed all but inevitable after the Chiefs signed former Texans safety Justin Reid to a three-year contract in March.

Recent reports indicate Mathieu has since met with at least a couple teams, most recently his hometown Saints.

But the three-time All-Pro, who turns 30 in May, said it hasn't been easy letting go of Kansas City, the city where he won his first Super Bowl title and where his family has settled in.

“Bro, I was depressed,” Mathieu told Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star. “Heartbroken. Heart. Broken."

Mathieu said he sensed for a while that the Chiefs were going to let him walk because there was little discussion about a new deal. He also said he probably would have accepted the terms of the offer they extended to Reid.

The former LSU star said knowing his time with the Chiefs was likely coming to an end made last season the hardest of his career. After stints with the Cardinals, Texans and Chiefs, the prospect of moving on once again weighed on him.

Mathieu said the willingness for his employers to turn the page on him doesn't add up given his resume.

“What I can’t figure out,” he told McDowell, “is how the hell I’m gonna be on my fourth team.”
