I got the chance to check out “A Beautiful Noise” at Playhouse Square last night.
It follows the life of Neil Diamond. From a nobody to international superstar.
The show itself had some technIcal difficulties, leading to an on again-off again first half. After close to an hour, the show was in full force and we were ready for it.
I’m a Neil Diamond fan. Not huge, but I appreciate the music. If you are a super fan, you will adore this show. If you are a fan, you will love it. If you’re currently googling Neil Diamond and just know Sweet Caroline, you will love it, too.
I have an affinity towards musicals involving people we all know. I love more music and less dialogue. This was exactly what I wanted in a show.
There was a lot I didn’t know about Neil’s life. From his personal life, to how he is currently suffering from Parkinson’s Disease at 83.
As we progress through Neil’s life, as told through the eyes of Neil and his therapist in present time, you get the sense that not all is coming up roses, or Cracklin’ Rosie’s. I have not met or heard about a musician that has a happy home life and work life. Maybe that’ll happen in my lifetime.
Yet all the songs are there, and it’s hard to tell that you’re not listening to Neil himself.
I’m also blown away by how many songs are in Neil’s catalog. I was waiting for the song I didn’t know, and never experienced it.
All in all, it was a tremendous journey through song and story and I’m so glad it is here in Cleveland.
Super fan, fan, or maybe you just played all the karaoke tunes on YouTube on the way home from the show to realize your appreciation. A Beautify Noise doesn’t disappoint.
Playing now through October 27th at The Connor Palace at Playhouse Square.
