I want you to be more like me.
Before you scroll down in disgust from my apparent lack of humility..I want you to be more like me, the radio broadcaster.
One of the beauties of my profession is that it doesn’t allow for a bad day.
I remember doing morning radio back in the day, and our host was about to crack the mic at 5:30.
He received a call from his girl and it quickly escalated into a domestic situation, it got so scary that he needed to leave briefly fearing for her life.
He was shaken up, and we played a longer than normal music sweep to start the morning.
When he returned about 40 minutes later, it was like nothing happened. He was the consummate professional, we did topics, we laughed on and off the air, and the walking on eggshells feeling I had feared, was immediately relieved.
That moment stood out to me and solidified my love for the job because the job worked both ways. It was our job to make someone forget about their worries and their strife, and was also therapeutic from a personal standpoint.
So, I want you to be more like me.
There are days (many of them) where I don't feel like I'm at my best, and yet when I crack that mic, something magical happens. I don't allow myself to get wrapped up in the stresses of the day, and I pay more attention to how I come across, the tone of my voice, and my desire to make it about someone else and not myself.
The occasional Lionel Richie and Nickelback song I play is just icing on the cake.
And yes, I could spend much more time adopting this philosophy outside of 3-7 on Star 102 and that is truly a work in progress, but the lesson is the same.
Do a radio show for your family, for your friends, for your co-workers, and don't forget...Do a radio show for yourself.
You see, knowing that you don't have a choice other than to be happy, is what is best.
People mimic the vibes you put out..And if you are self-absorbed in all that bothers you..Well, so will your people.
We sometimes save all that is wrong with our lives for the people we love the most. Sure the outlet is needed, but could you just power through some of it with the mic of life and the headphones for happiness?
Because once the rules change, so will you.
Lionel Richie The Definitive Collection, and Nickelback-The Best of Nickelback Volume 1 for more info.
All my best as you figure out life and the relationships in it.
XOXO Glenn
