“Doing something for yourself gives motivation..Doing something for others gives meaning"
Steph writes motivational quotes for all the kids each day and puts them into their lunch boxes..She searches the internet early each morning to find something that makes sense given the current circumstances of life.
I read all of them, but todays was particularly awesome.
Doing some research, the quote comes from Maxime Legace', a hockey player in Sweden. He has a ton of motivational quotes should you wanna look him up.
I don't know about you, but as life goes on, I am searching for meaning and concentrating less on my own personal motivation.
That's not to say I'm lazy. That's not to say I don't think of myself, but acquiring things and achieving accomplishments seems very..
Selfish.
And maybe it's because I have achieved a lot in life. I am accomplishing career goals, relationship goals, athletic goals, and a goal or two against my kids in the backyard.
It amazes me how people keep setting personal goals as a way to define success or happiness.
One more zero on the paycheck (although that wouldn't be bad), one more car, a few more square feet of living space, one more like on social...We measure happiness by getting more.
What if you measured happiness by GIVING more?
Rich people feel empty to me. They keep trying to find meaning by acquiring more and more things. We got a hot tub a few years ago.
It's amazing and we love it, but it doesn't provide meaning...It proves warmth..and well, when you adjust the jets the right way..
But the feeling is fleeting, and I can either buy more stuff, which is hard because of the whole money thing..Or I can..
Think less about myself.
And doing for others doesn't mean I have to buy more stuff.
It means I have to focus less on myself. It means being aware that there is more to life than you. It means no matter how many vacations you go on, how many letters there are after your name on your business card, that you ultimately should find meaning in your faith and by discovering your purpose.
And by the way, your purpose is not to serve you.
Now...back to the hot tub..I just got a new pump
All my best as you figure out life and the relationships in it
XOXO Glenn
