What is: a feat so rare, even avid “Jeopardy!” viewers have only seen it a handful of times on the game show.
After 11 previous wins, Canadian contestant Mattea Roach continued her strong streak this week, to the point that when Final Jeopardy arrived, she was the only contestant with a positive cash balance.
And as Entertainment Tonight Canada said, there she stood, alone for the final round.
Sounding like that voiceover guy in dramatic movie trailers, host Ken Jennings uttered, “And then there was one.” He went on to remind the viewers that they were witnessing a “rare solo Final Jeopardy.”
Pop culture site Just Jared clarified that this has only happened three times in the show’s history – 2012, 2015, and 2020.
Facing zero competition, Roach went on to win both that night and Thursday – her 13th consecutive victory on the iconic game show. She is now up to $286,081 in total winnings.
Recent "Jeopardy!" news has focused on Mayim Bialik’s tenure as a co-host, including some fan backlash about some of her hosting quirks, such as calling the opening round of the game "Single Jeopardy" as opposed to just "the Jeopardy round."
Not to mention Bialik herself having recently addressed some fan complaints about her wardrobe. As she told Drew Barrymore recently, "I’m part of an also, like, an iconic thing that people have a lot of opinions about."
We'll see if Roach can continue to "stand alone" as she attempts to continue her suddenly iconic winning streak.
