Known for his one-of-a-kind smile and "goofball" tendencies, most wouldn’t think to associate Country superstar Luke Bryan with tragedy. With a unique ability to light up a room and bring a smile to any face, many would be surprised to find that Luke’s contagious joy is a result of unthinkable loss.

“I’m a pretty joyful person,” Bryan told PEOPLE in a recent interview “I try to use what’s happened to me — it helps me remember we’re not promised another day. Get the most out of life that you can.”

Luke has been reminded of life’s uncertainties time and time again after losing his brother, Chris, in a 1996 car accident, his sister, Kelly, for unknown health reasons in 2007 and her widower, Lee, seven years later to a heart attack.

"I've had so many tragedies in my life," shared Bryan. “It's almost like you don't want to tell the story because you don't want to feel like you're out there craving sympathy."

Regardless of hesitation, Luke is sharing his truth in hopes of encouraging others in the midst of grief via a new IMDb TV docu-series, Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary. The 5-episode project, releasing August 6, will highlight Luke’s journey from his childhood in Georgia, to headlining shows in Nashville and the ways tragedy has impacted his career.

“This docuseries honors and tells a story of who they [those lost] were, in relation to my life and how they kind of grew my life,” Bryan said of the project. “If I can inspire people to move on from tragedy, hopefully by my behavior, that's what life's all about for me."
