LOS ANGELES – “Everything, Everywhere All at Once” preceded its name at the 95th Academy Awards as the A24 film won seven awards, including the night’s biggest award best picture.
The film’s lead, Michelle Yeoh, made history as the first Asian woman to win the Academy Award for best actress.
“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibility,” she said. “This is proof that dreams dream big and dreams do come true. And ladies, don't let anyone ever tell you you're past your prime.”
The movie also gave Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis their first Oscars wins in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories.
“They say stories like this only happen the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This — this is the American dream!” Quan said.
“I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I am not. I am hundreds of people…we just won an Oscar,” Curtis said.
Meanwhile, Brendan Fraser won best actor for his performance in “The Whale”, a film which sparked a career comeback for the 54-year-old.
“I started in this business 30 years ago and things didn’t come easily to me,” he said. “I just want to say thank you for this acknowledgement.”
The night’s other biggest winner was “All Quiet on the Western Front”, which grabbed four awards including best international feature.
No "nonsense", just playful jabs
No nonsense. That’s what emcee Jimmy Kimmel promised as the 95th Academy Awards kicked off.
Kimmel, who marked his third time hosting, made jabs at director James Cameron and Tom Cruise, neither of whom attended the ceremony and even brought out the donkey from “The Banshees of Inisherin.” He also asked famous members of the audience “fan questions”, including asking Malala if Harry Styles really did spit on Chris Pine.
While the show appeared to run smoothly, last year's slap was mentioned not once, but three times. The first one occurred 14 minutes into the show, Kimmel joked that although the Oscars did have their crisis team, he had Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and his talk show sidekick Guillermo will intervene.
The second time was prior to the presentation of best documentary feature, which proceeded peacefully.
The third time was at the end of the show when the camera followed Kimmel backstage, panning to sign that read “SHOWS WITHOUT INCIDENTS: 001.”
