Happy Friday, Atlanta! If you’re heading out this morning, here’s a quick look at the day ahead: it’s only 37°F now, but the sun will warm us up to the mid-60s this afternoon. Tonight, expect a drop to around 42°F. And if you’re ready for some weekend fun, the weather couldn’t be better for the Atlanta St. Patrick’s Day Parade tomorrow, sunny skies and a perfect 74°F. Keep an eye out for the Southeastern Greyhound Adoption group marching with adorable pups!
Here are three things you need to know to start your day:
1. New Superintendent for Gwinnett County
Gwinnett County, the largest school district in Georgia, has a new superintendent. After a nationwide search, Dr. Alexandra Estrella has been selected. She brings more than 26 years of experience in education, starting as a science teacher in New York City and currently serving as superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools in Connecticut. Best of luck to Dr. Estrella as she steps into this new role!
2. World Cup Countdown: 94 Days to Go
Soccer fans, get excited, Atlanta is gearing up for the World Cup. Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be temporarily renamed Atlanta Stadium during the tournament due to FIFA sponsorship rules. Students from SCAD are designing directional signs and light poles to help international fans navigate the city, with plans for universal symbols to make them easy for everyone to understand. The Fan Festival promises concerts, games, kid-friendly plays, street vendors, and local artists showing off their talents.
3. Georgia Lottery Winner
Someone in Georgia is celebrating big after winning $2 million on a Jackpot’s Galore scratch-off ticket. The lucky ticket was purchased at the Rex C-Store in Rex, Georgia. While the winner’s identity remains a mystery, we can already picture a very happy new owner cruising around in a shiny Ford F-150 by the weekend.
