Thousands of students and teachers across metro Atlanta returned to the classroom Monday as the new school year officially began for many districts, marking the end of summer break and the start of another academic year.
Schools in Atlanta Public Schools, Calhoun City, Clayton, Cobb, Decatur City, DeKalb, Fayette, Fulton, Henry, Rockdale and Walton counties were among those welcoming students back. Educators are encouraging families to establish strong routines early, including reading together each day and setting an example by putting away phones and making time to read at home.
Fulton County Schools also introduced updated bus routes designed to improve efficiency and help students arrive at school about 10 minutes before the first bell. District officials are encouraging parents to use the “Here Comes the Bus” mobile app to track bus locations and stay informed about route changes.
As families shared first-day-of-school photos online, the FBI's Atlanta field office reminded parents to be mindful of what appears in those images. Officials recommend avoiding photos that reveal home addresses, house numbers or nearby cross streets, noting that personal details posted online can be misused by bad actors.
Meanwhile, the Georgia Aquarium announced the loss of one of its most recognizable residents. Charlie, a penguin who lived to the remarkable age of 40, died after far exceeding the typical life expectancy of 10 to 20 years for his species. Hatched in 1985, Charlie spent decades at the aquarium, where he formed a long-term bond with his mate, Lizzy, and helped foster numerous penguin chicks. Lizzy died last year.
