DeKalb County Schools are joining a growing number of districts nationwide in a lawsuit against Meta and YouTube, alleging social media platforms are designed to be addictive and harmful to students’ mental health.
The move follows a recent high-profile case in which a young woman was awarded $6 million in damages after arguing social media negatively impacted her well-being. School systems involved in the broader legal effort claim the platforms contribute to rising anxiety, depression and behavioral issues among students.
At the state level, several education-related bills are headed to the governor’s desk that could significantly change the school day for Georgia students. One measure would ban cell phones and other personal communication devices — including tablets, laptops, smartwatches and headphones — in public high schools.
Supporters say the restriction would reduce distractions and improve learning, while critics argue it could limit access to technology used for educational purposes.
Another proposal would increase the number of literacy coaches in schools, aiming to strengthen reading skills and provide additional support for students and teachers.
In sports, WNBA standout Angel Reese is headed to the Atlanta Dream in a major trade. The 22-year-old forward, known as one of the league’s top rebounders, is a two-time All-Star who previously played for the Chicago Sky.
The move is expected to bolster Atlanta’s roster as the team looks to build momentum heading into the upcoming season.
