Atlanta is receiving national attention for both tourism and technology as the city was ranked the top summer vacation destination in the United States while Amazon announced plans to expand ultra-fast delivery services across parts of metro Atlanta.
Researchers recently named Atlanta the best place in the country for a summer vacation after evaluating travel costs, local attractions, affordability, weather and entertainment options. The study highlighted popular destinations including the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Zoo Atlanta, Piedmont Park and the Atlanta BeltLine.
The city’s nightlife and late operating hours for restaurants and bars also contributed to the ranking.
Meanwhile, Amazon announced it is expanding its new rapid delivery program, called “Amazon Now,” into parts of Atlanta. The service promises delivery times of 30 minutes or less for select orders placed through Amazon Prime.
The company says the expansion is part of its continuing effort to increase convenience and speed for customers in major metropolitan areas. Atlanta joins a growing number of cities testing the accelerated delivery service.
In health news, officials continue monitoring individuals connected to a hantavirus outbreak tied to a cruise ship.
One patient transported to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta earlier this week has tested negative for the virus, according to updates released Tuesday. Officials also said all 16 Americans currently being monitored in Omaha remain asymptomatic.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially serious illness often linked to exposure to infected rodents or rodent droppings. Health officials say they continue to monitor the situation closely while emphasizing that no widespread public threat has been identified at this time.
