Changes to Georgia’s college savings program, the economic impact of the FIFA World Cup in Atlanta and new research examining how childhood experiences can shape adult relationships are among the topics gaining attention across the state.

Georgia families looking to save for future education expenses will soon have more flexibility through updates to the state’s 529 college savings plan. The changes increase the maximum amount families can save in their accounts while also eliminating administrative fees associated with the program.

The state’s 529 plan allows families to set aside money for qualified education expenses, including college and other eligible educational costs. Officials say the updates are designed to make saving for education more accessible and reduce barriers for families planning for future expenses.

Meanwhile, Atlanta continues to see the impact of hosting FIFA World Cup events, with the city ranking among the busiest FIFA Fan Festival locations in the country.

More than half a million visitors attended World Cup-related events in Atlanta, bringing increased activity to local businesses, hotels and transportation systems. MARTA ridership saw a significant increase during the tournament, while area hotels reported higher bookings as fans traveled to the city for matches and celebrations.

The tournament has provided an economic boost for many parts of metro Atlanta while showcasing the city to visitors from around the world.

Researchers at the University of Georgia are also highlighting how experiences during childhood can affect emotional well-being later in life. A study examining difficult childhood experiences found that factors such as family conflict, food insecurity and divorce can contribute to challenges including loneliness, anxiety and depression in adulthood.

Researchers say these experiences may also influence romantic relationships, potentially creating challenges with communication, trust and emotional connections. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding how early-life experiences can continue to shape people’s lives years later.
