Hill City Elementary: A Seed of Kindness Grows
Hill City Elementary students grow food, compost, and donate to hurricane relief. Their efforts earned them $2,000 in the Delta Community Credit Union Give Back Giveaway.
Hill City Elementary School in Jasper, Georgia, is a shining example of how young students can make a significant impact on their community. Led by their passionate agriculture teacher, Miss Sonia Chapman, students are actively involved in a variety of projects that benefit both their school and the surrounding area.
One of the school's most notable initiatives is its agriculture program, where over 600 students learn the art of farming. From planting seeds to harvesting crops, students gain valuable hands-on experience and contribute to a sustainable food system. The abundant produce grown by the students is donated to the school's food pantry, providing fresh, nutritious food to families in need. In fact each year Hill City donates more than 100 gallons of produce to their local community. Liam, Hill City student, shared his enthusiasm for the agriculture program, saying, "We grow a lot of stuff like pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, and zucchini, and we usually take it to other schools for their lunches."

Beyond their agricultural endeavors, Hill City students are also committed to environmental sustainability. They have implemented a composting program that diverts food waste from landfills and creates nutrient-rich soil for local food banks. By reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices, these young environmentalists are making a positive impact on their community. Lydia, another student leader, highlighted the importance of composting, explaining, "You can compost napkins, salad, carrots, celery, fruits, and lots of vegetables."

When Hurricane Helene struck, Hill City students rallied together to support those affected by the disaster. They collected essential supplies such as canned goods, pillows, toothpaste, shampoo, and other items to donate to families in need. This act of compassion demonstrates the school's commitment to helping others, even in times of crisis. Fourth-grade student leader Tucker expressed his pride in contributing to the hurricane relief efforts, stating, "It made me feel good that we were doing a good deed for them."
Hill City Elementary School's dedication to service, sustainability, and community has earned them recognition as the runner-up in the Delta Community Credit Union $15,000 Give Back Giveaway. The $2,000 prize will further support their ongoing efforts to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
