Metro Atlanta residents can expect heavier police presence on roadways, enhanced security surrounding FIFA World Cup events and the potential for additional travel delays as thunderstorms move through the area.

Law enforcement agencies across Georgia and several neighboring states launched Operation Southern Slow Down on Monday, a regional traffic enforcement campaign aimed at reducing speeding and encouraging safer driving habits. The initiative, which runs through July 19, includes participation from police departments in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Officials say the campaign is designed to improve roadway safety during one of the busiest travel periods of the summer. Drivers are encouraged to obey speed limits and remain alert as officers increase patrols throughout the week.

Meanwhile, Atlanta is preparing for one of its biggest FIFA World Cup matches yet as England and Argentina are set to face off Wednesday afternoon. Security measures are being expanded around the city’s World Cup events, including at FIFA Fan Fest.

Visitors to downtown Atlanta may notice an increased presence of mounted police officers from multiple agencies, including the Atlanta Police Department, the Memphis Police Department, the Savannah Police Department and the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say the additional resources are intended to help manage large crowds expected for the international matchup.

Travelers using Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also may face continued disruptions after a ground stop Sunday afternoon lasted several hours. The airport has experienced multiple ground stops in recent days because of severe weather conditions.

Forecasters are calling for additional thunderstorms throughout the week, raising the possibility of further delays at the nation’s busiest airport. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines before heading to the airport and to allow extra time for travel.
