Do you remember when the Godmother of Soul, Patti LaBelle and the Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight blessed us with one epically soulful Verzuz battle.
Labelle started the evening off by saying how they were “happy to be together,” as they’ve ”been together for many, many, many years.” They then recounted their long history together, sharing memories and stories of how their careers frequently crossed paths over the years. Once again, the so-called battle was more of a love-fest with the dynamic duo expressing their admiration and respect for one another, even shouting out more than their work on the stage, but in the kitchen as well.
With over half a million fans watching over Instagram Live, plus more uncounted from YouTube and Apple Music, the iconic duo got together in a mostly empty theater to deliver us hit after hit of the classics. Including, the 1973 jam from Gladys Knight and the Pips, “Midnight Train to Georgia,” and yes we got our wish and favorite bop from the night, Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” among many more.
And just when we thought the epic battle between legends couldn’t get any better, our other wish came true, Dionne Warwick showed up and surprised us all. Well, we had a feeling, that’s what friends are for, right?
Overall the evening did not disappoint, and as for who the winner is, pretty sure everybody won this one, especially us watching at home.
