After dealing with the intense emotions and situations of playing a pregnant, doomed movie star in "The Haunting of Sharon Tate" in 2019, Hilary Duff is back to more familiar breezy comedy territory.
She will star as the lead, Sophie, in “How I Met Your Father,” the “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off coming from Hulu.

But of course a wide acting range can only take you so far. “How I Met Your Father” has plans to show a future, older Sophie, and it’s been confirmed by Entertainment Weekly that Kim Catttrall will be playing the future Duff.
Cattrall will be the recurring voiceover narrator, but will also appear in the flesh in some episodes.
The cast also includes Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, Suraj Sharma, Chris Lowell, and Brandon Micheal Hall.
Aside from her consistent refusal to work with any "Sex and the City" revivals, this new role might be another of the reasons Cattrall decided not to appear in the new HBO series, “And Just Like That" -- a sequel to the show Cattrall became famous on, “Sex and the City,” where she played the saucy Samantha Jones.
The other three principals from the original show will revive their characters on the sequel.
Cattrall did have a recent “Sex and the City” reunion of sorts when she worked with that show’s costume designer, Patricia Field, during the making of “Filthy Rich,” Cattrall’s short-lived 2020 series on Fox.
Like Cattrall, Field too has passed on working on the "Sex and the City" sequel.
Like "How I Met Your Father," the Duff-lead Hulu series will take place in New York City. Set in the future, Sophie will tell her son the story of how she met his father in 2021, touching on modern dating rituals like the use of apps.
