While it might be hard to think that far back, there was actually a time when Lady Gaga wasn’t the superstar she is today. Yes, there was a time before Mother Monster was selling out shows, and on the latest episode of Hot Ones, she revealed the hack she used back then to get herself gigs.

Back in the day, when Gaga’s calendar was filled with, “No sleep, bus, club, another club, another club, plane, next place, no sleep…” she’d get those gigs by calling up these clubs and pretending to be her own manager, even using different accents to help her seal the deal.

“I look back on that time so fondly when I would spend the whole day trying to get gigs,” she told Hot Ones host Sean Evans. “I would knock on door after door and say, ‘Can I please play here?’ Or I would call and pretend I was my manager. I would tell people ‘She’s so hot right now.’ Sometimes I would do an accent.”

While eating progressively spicier chicken wings as part of the latest piece of promotion ahead of the arrival of her seventh studio album, MAYHEM, dropping March 7. The pop star also went on to share how her piano background impacts her songwriting process, reflect on her high school cover band Mackin Pulsifer, the connection between Pop and high art, and more.
