The inaugural Lilith Fair took place in 1997 as McLachlan founded the all-female traveling music festival bringing together women from across all musical genres.

The 1997 tour featured McLachlan, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, The Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman, Jewel, Emmylou Harris, Paula Cole, Lisa Loeb, Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, and numerous other artists. The event became a smashing success as it was the top-grossing touring festival of 1997 and became the 16th-highest grossing tour of the year. Additionally, the tour raised over $10 million for charity from 1997-1999.

Aside from the financial impact of the festival, McLachlan had another goal in mind. "To create an environment where everybody gets to be seen and heard and valued, and come as you are, you know, let your freak flag fly,” McLachlan told NPR in a recent interview. “This is the place you get to do that and there is no judgment here.”

The impact of Lilith Fair is still being felt 25 years later and Audacy has a station dedicated to the artists that shaped the festival. Hit play on Audacy’s Building a Lilith and celebrate 25 years of the Lilith Fair!
