Google Doodles and artist Sam Bass, specifically, created a touching, animated montage with career highlights including Vandross playing piano in the clouds, him on Sesame Street, writing jingles and the variations of love he always sang about, while his timeless hit, "Never Too Much" played in the background.
The hit turns 40 this year; it peaked at No. 1 on the soul singles chart and No. 4 on the dance charts. Never Too Much, the album, launched Vandross' solo career and throughout his career, he released 13 studio albums, won 8 GRAMMYs and garnered the nickname "Velvet Voice."
When asked by Google about the project, Bass expressed, "while working on this project I had a lot of feelings, but the main one was joy. It was so much fun getting to figure out ways to make each moment in the video feel intimate and a part of the overall story. I was creating small vignettes about togetherness, all types of love, nostalgia, and happiness—all while listening to an iconic song on repeat!"
In a statement provided to Google, the "Wait For Love" crooner's family expressed, "it is a true reflection of Luther Vandross' musical legacy around the world to be honored by Google with an animated video Doodle that fittingly captures the joy Luther has brought the world. Luther made each of his songs about one simple, universal subject— love; an emotion and feeling common to the human experience no matter who you are, where you're from or what you look like."
You can watch the tribute video above and it's also available on Google's homepage.
