A two-time cancer survivor wasn't about to let her students learning online from home down after having to undergo emergency surgery.
Just a few hours after undergoing a medical procedure and still in the hospital recovering, teacher Stephany Hume from Garland ISD's Sewell Elementary in Sachse got right back to work, connecting with her students online.
"I was asking the doctor, 'Can I go now? Can I go now?' And he's like, 'You have a temperature of 102. You have to stay" said Hume, according to NBCDFW.
So the reading teacher got online, opened up her book, and began reading and connecting with her kids.
"I am a two-time cancer survivor," said Hume. "I had put off going to the doctor because I didn't want to miss anything. It turns out I had to have surgery."
Even though Hume did have to take a few days away from the class, her mother who is a retired educator herself, jumped in to substitute for her daughter.
"I was thinking she needed to rest but being a teacher myself I understood," said Susie Harris, Hume's mother and a retired teacher with 41 years of experience.
"These kids are feeling the same feelings we're feeling," said Hume to NBCDFW.com. "They're afraid, they're unsure of what's coming next."
Hume's students were obviously concerned for thier teacher, but went right back to communicating with her in the online classroom 'chat box' as they saw her on theri screen.
