First, the slowly unfolding, minute-and-a-half clip begins with blustery, whiteout snowy scenes of barren trees and hills… until you notice a snake wrapped around a branch. It’s a creepy contradiction.

Then a frozen bird.

The frozen animals then begin to defrost and crack, revealing golden versions.

It’s pretty beautiful and oddly dramatic, but don’t go expecting scenes from the film just yet. This is a classic teaser, offering only a dramatic invitation:

“You’re invited to return to the games….In 2023, the world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”

Fans of the original hit film/book series can make their guesses, but for now, a synopsis of the film’s story was released with the teaser:

"Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol."

"With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching,” it continues, “the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem's attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor."

It’s been seven years since the last "Hunger Games" film starring Jennifer Lawrence, with this new entry acting as a prequel to the popular series.

As UPI reported, the dystopian tale stars Tom Blyth (“The Guilded Age”) and Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”), and is based on Suzanne Collin's best-selling young adult novel.

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" is set for release November 17, 2023.
