Since we're doing a One Hit Wonder Weekend this weekend it's time to spotlight one of the songs you'll hear, "Something About You" by Level 42 from 1985. They got their name from the Douglas Adams book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where "42" is the answer to a question about the meaning of life.
"Something About You" became Level 42's first and biggest hit in the US. The band actually wasn't even sure that the song was good enough for their album The World Machine. It had a more commercial sound and fancier production than their previous jazz funk recordings. The World Machine has now sold over three million copies worldwide and had a 72-week stay on the US charts! The song was clearly more than good enough and was acknowledged at the 1991 BMI Awards for one million US performances.
Bassist Mark King, whose percussive slap bass technique is known as the "Man with the Golden Thumb." His hands were insured in the late 1980's for a fortune due to his talent and skill.
