AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in southeast Austin Friday night.
Austin Police say officers responded to the 2600 block of South Pleasant Valley Road just after 6:30 p.m. on a 911 call reporting people in a car doing drugs, one of which the caller said had a gun in his hands. The caller also said the suspect was putting the gun in the air.
Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said the suspect, who was described as a Hispanic man in his 40s, refused to comply with officers' commands. A non-lethal shot was fired at the suspect, after which he proceeded to get back into his vehicle and attempt to drive away. That's when a second officer fired a lethal shot.
Manley said the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 7:46 p.m.
According to Manley, police believe the vehicle involved is linked to several other crimes in the past week, including evading police in a separate incident Thursday.
Police are waiting on a warrant to search the vehicle.
Manley said the officer who fired the non-lethal shot has been on the force for three months, a member of the most recent cadet class; the officer who fired the lethal shot has been with APD for five years.
