AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Austin Humane Society is calling for adopters and supplies as shelter pets make their way from the Texas coast in the wake of Hurricane Laura.

AHS officials announced earlier this week that roughly 250 shelter dogs and cats were being pre-emptively transported to Austin from shelters in Woodville, Baytown, Rockport, and the greater Houston area. This helps to free up shelter space in coastal areas for pets that are separated from their owners due to the impacts of the storm.

As the animals are medically evaluated and cleared, they'll become available for adoption on the AHS website.

"If we are able to quickly connect these animals to their forever homes, we will be able to make room to bring in even more animals affected by the hurricane, should the need arise," AHS President and CEO Frances Jonon said.

The Austin Humane Society also has an urgent need for the following supplies:
  • Towels
  • Flat sheets
  • Shallow cardboard boxes
  • Plastic double-sided pet food bowls (small)
  • Paper towels

Those interested in donating any of these items can leave them on the front porch of the AHS facility at 124 West Anderson Lane at any time. AHS also has an Amazon Wish List set up for those who wish to donate by purchasing needed items, as well as more details on their website
